Lost in Space: Maintaining Data Integrity with Mobile GIS Solutions

"Modern day asset tracking is transitioning from a two dimensional “spreadsheet view” to four dimensional, spatiotemporal asset management. Near-real time data allows utilities to find and address problems before they become detrimental to an entire system and mobile solutions make it easier to capture more data than ever before. This data density, if not managed properly, can be both a blessing and a curse. One fat-fingered typo can be the difference between a successful valve repair and an accidental water shortage, making data integrity more integral than ever. Nationwide, many utilities still rely on disjointed legacy systems comprised of numerous spreadsheets, non-spatial databases, and GIS data. At first glance, this disconnect makes implementing real-time asset management in a GIS environment complex. But we’re here to tell you it doesn’t have to be!
Leveraging the custom URL schemes within ArcGIS mobile solutions and FME Desktop we were able to integrate real-time mobile data collection into legacy systems without significant database restructuring. Come learn the nuts and bolts of these integrations and follow the journey of one gas meter from a line item on a spreadsheet to a feature service of its very own. We’ll demo a custom batch assignment process using Web AppBuilder and Workforce for ArcGIS, share how to pass customized complex values between all of Esri’s mobile solutions, and show how backend integration can make real-time asset management function with legacy systems."
