Mapping Recreation - Classifying Information Across the State

Washington Hometown is working to build a statewide data set of recreation and culture that can be used for maps, apps and analysis. One of the biggest challenges in this project is to create a classification scheme for recreation resources that can be used to tell a meaningful story for all types of recreation users and recreation managers. Whether it is trying to classify boat launches in a way that is helpful for fishermen in inland rivers and those with yachts on Puget Sound, figuring out how to capture informal agreements when talking about trail use, or classifying public recreation lands from the smallest pocket park to a national forest. In this talk, we will address some of the biggest challenges and solicit input from the audience
